Recipe: Japanese Beef

The lovely Heidihollywood over on Twitter passed this recipe onto me and it was so good that I had to blog it. It's pretty healthy too - as long as you don't mind the red meat.

BBC Good Food Japanese Beef

Serves 2

250gm piece rump steak (trimmed of all fat)
150ml veg stock
3 tbsp soy sauce
5 tbsp mirin
1 tbsp golden caster sugar
1 onion (halved and sliced)
1/2 tbsp chopped pickled ginger
3 spring onions (finely chopped)
1 red chilli
Steamed rice to serve

  1. Put the meat in the freezer while you prepare all the other ingredients (this makes it easier to slice)
  2. Combine the stock, soy, mirin and sugar in a pan, bring to the boil, add the onion, then simmer for 5 mins
  3. Slice the meat as thinly as you can, add beef to the pan and simmer till cooked through. Sprinkle with the ginger, spring onions and chilli and serve over steamed rice

This is as simple as it is tasty and I will definitely be making it regularly. The pickled ginger and mirin are easy to get in the big 24hr supermarkets. Next time I make it though I won't cook the beef all the way through as I like mine rare.

Enjoy!
